(MOBILE PRESS-REGISTER) — Few Alabamians suffer from the hemophilia, but treating the blood-clotting disease costs taxpayers millions of dollars a year, an Alabama Medicaid official testified today.

Kelli Littlejohn, the director of pharmacy for the Alabama Medicaid Agency, told jurors at a federal health care fraud trial that it is not uncommon to see a claim for hemophilia medication to cost $50,000 to $100,000. That compares with an average cost of $24 for generic medication and $200 for brand-name medicines.
