(SUN-SENTINEL) — LAKE WORTH, Fla. — The city’s push to encourage recycling and reduce the volume of waste trucked to the county landfill goes high-tech this week.

The refuse division is beginning a one-year pilot test of a computerized monitoring system that tells managers when residents recycle – and when they don’t.

Bar codes linked to addresses have been added to the green-and-yellow recycling containers of all the 9,000 single-family homes and duplexes in the city.

Apartments, condos and commercial buildings will not be included in the test.
